Alana Woods

Alana Woods, in the publishing field for more than 45 years, has accepted challenges that included most publishing positions. Ms. Woods enjoys learning, interacting with people, helping when and where needed, and taking on new and varied tasks. Her newest challenge is developing and producing technology-specific web pages to make the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) technologies more accessible to potential clients surfing the web for answers to problems.

Related Experience

Since 1977, Ms. Woods has been at SwRI enjoying many opportunities to grow and learn. Originally hired as a cold-type-composition technician (typesetter) in the publications services department, she soon advanced to administrative assistant. A detour into the graphics section for 5 years rounded out her publishing experience. In addition to the web tech pages, her duties as assistant specialist include coordinating the design and production of various print media including recruitment advertising and collateral materials, editing and producing newsletters for professional/scientific/community organizations, and editing technical reports.

Other Experience

In addition to the usual work duties, Ms. Woods was the Publicity Committee Chairman of the Research Recreation Association for 5 years and a member of the Institute Management Advisory Committee (IMAC) for 4 years. While a member of IMAC, Ms. Woods chaired 5 successful United Way fundraising campaigns, which included planning and executing coordination, activities, and publicity. In the very successful 2000 United Way campaign, she co-chaired the publicity committee, which implemented several innovative activities.

In 1992, after being a member of Toastmaster International for 9 months, Ms. Woods helped to start a club at SwRI called the Slick Talkers. Since, she has held several officer positions in the club. In 2013, she earned the Distinguished Toastmaster Award.
